Opening Morning

Opening morning  of Spring turkey season is a cherished rite of spring in New Mexico. The weather is usually still cool, crisp and clear with the aire often filled with the hens calling and Tom’s gobbling! The Spring Turkey Season is Typically April 15-May 10 and over the counter permits are easily obtainable in addition to online purchase on the New Mexico Department of Game and Fish website. Opening Morning Double Bounty

Eugene Heathman, President of the NWTF Lincoln County Spurs Chapter in Ruidoso, NM  displays his opening morning ‘double’ bounty. The Sacramento mountains of south central, New Mexico are filled with history and tales of lore in addition to providing more than one million acres of accessible public lands to sustain a healthy Merriam Turkey species population. Whether Spring or Fall, the turkeys are forest ‘smart’  requiring hunters to adapt with different different styles , depending on terrain and conditions to harvest these healthy birds.
